Typically developing in childhood or adolescence, behavioral disorders are mental health conditions that can cause a young person to display chronic patterns of aggression, act defiantly towards adults and other authority figures, or cause disruptions at home or in school. The presence of a behavioral disorder in a child or adolescent can cause a number of problems in a variety of settings and can prevent them from being able to establish healthy relationships with family and friends. Furthermore, having a behavioral disorder puts a young person at risk for the development of other mental health conditions as adults, of which may include personality disorders, depression, or bipolar disorder.
While the symptoms of behavioral disorders will present differently in children and adolescents depending upon individual characteristics and the specific type of behavior disorder present, there are some common symptoms that tend to occur. For example children with behavioral disorders may have temper tantrums, engage in self-harming behaviors, damage or destroy property, or consistently lie. Additionally, it is not uncommon for a child to abuse drugs or alcohol, skip school, steal, engage in risky sexual behaviors, or engage in violent acts such as bullying or fighting.
When behavioral disorders are not addressed, the resulting effects or complications that develop as a direct result of a child or adolescent’s behavior can be serious and, in some instances, life-threatening. Untreated or poorly controlled behavioral disorders can cause a child to be unable to succeed academically, hold down a job when they get older, or lack the social skills needed to maintain stable, long lasting relationships. Sexually transmitted diseases, physical harm to self, and suicide can also be the result of such disorders.
