Chrysalis Mentally Retarded/Developmentally Delayed (MR/DD) Unit

CHRYSALIS UNIT

The Chrysalis Unit specializes in the care, treatment, and supervision of the severely emotionally disturbed MR/DD population utilizing Cognitive Behavior Therapy coupled with Behavior Modification.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is done on a daily basis to aid in reminding clients of the thinking errors that may lead to self defeating and explosive reactions via groups and processing with Milieu Counselors, Therapists, Psychiatrists, Nurses, and the Program Director. During the client's stay at Desert Hills they move through a Phase System that determines when the client is ready for discharge.  Behavior Modification is tied into this by utilizing a color wheel that is reinforced by recognizing and rewarding positive behavior and rewarding this behavior on an hourly basis.

The diagnosis of the clientele range from mild to moderate MR/DD, and within the entire Autistic Spectrum including PDD and Asperger's.  Due to the variation of cognitive abilities and functions, individualized programs are utilized in order to ensure that treatment includes tasks involved in the clients Assisted Daily Living such as brushing one's teeth, washing laundry, and making one's bed.  Visual schedule-boards are used and multiple visual cues are placed throughout the unit in order to aid in self-sufficiency and a reduction of prompting by the milieu staff for an overall better quality of life initiated by the client.

Treatment team meets weekly and is facilitated by a Psychiatrist who is reviewing the progress/lack of progress of the client. Family/natural supports participation is essential in helping direct the course of treatment.
