Sexually Maladaptive Behavior Unit

SEXUALLY MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR UNIT

This is a program for 11-18 year old adolescent males who have demonstrated maladaptive sexual behaviors. The client learns to recognize his abusive behavior towards others and patterns of abuse. This is a highly structured and secure environment, in which the individual learns tools to achieve and maintain healthy relationships.

We use the "Abuse is Abuse" philosophy - Abuse of self, others, and property. Abuse of self includes: Substance abuse - eating disorders - risk taking behaviors - sexual promiscuity - self deprecation - suicidal/self harm behaviors. Abuse of others includes: Intimidation - humiliation/degradation - discrimination/prejudice - coercion - aggression - violence. Abuse of property includes: Vandalism - theft - fire setting - defacing.

The bedrooms are all monitored by motion detectors that are equipped with audio and visual sensors for individual safety. One single room is reserved for higher risk clients.

This unit provides a 4:1 resident-to-staff ratio, even though state regulations specify a 5:1 resident-to-staff ratio. Core staff are trained to work with this population, and the residents are supervised at all times. "Eyes-on" supervision is a critical component of the program. Staff are required to walk up and down the hall checking on the clients for inappropriate behaviors when they are in their rooms.

The clients meet with their therapist once per week for family therapy, once per week for individual therapy, and three times per week for group therapy. Clients also meet with their milieu counselors three times a day for group therapy. Clients have treatment team with their psychiatrist, therapist, program director, families and natural supports, and a milieu counselor every twenty-eight days. The clients also have CBT  (cognitive behavior therapy)  group four times per week with staff.

No contact with victims is allowed until clinically approved. No contact with anyone under the age of 13 is allowed. (This includes pictures.) Probation vs. non-probation: Not all of the Residents are on probation. It's not a requirement.
